Suffragette

Description

The time for talking is over. The fight begins now. In 1912 London, Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan) is a young, exhausted laundry worker who has spent her entire life enduring grueling shifts and unsafe conditions under a predatory boss. Her routine life is upended when she is caught in the middle of a chaotic protest orchestrated by the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU)—a radical activist group led by the fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep). Drawn into the movement by her fierce co-worker Violet Miller (Anne-Marie Duff) and a rebellious local pharmacist, Edith Ellyn (Helena Bonham Carter), Maud begins to realize that peaceful civil disobedience is no longer enough to win the right to vote. Facing a patriarchal government that systematically silences them, Maud and her fellow foot soldiers turn to radical, direct action: shattering shop windows, cutting telegraph wires, and staging hunger strikes. But as the police force under Inspector Arthur Steed (Brendan Gleeson) unleashes a brutal crackdown, Maud is forced to risk everything she holds dear—her job, her home, her husband, and even her young child—in a dangerous, history-altering battle for dignity and equality.
